HUMLA: First Initiation Towards sustainable Sanitation

Humla is one of the remotest districts in Nepal where people don't have access to basic needs including water and sanitation facilities. On March, 2011 one social worker and two local masons from Humla district approached to ENPHO requesting to provide training on ECOSAN toilet. They received hands on training on construction of ECOSAN toilets from ENPHO within Nepal Node for Sustainable Sanitation (NNSS) project.

After the training, they had shown their commitment to initiate establishment of first ever ECOSAN toilet in Humla district. Going back to their community at Yangar VDC, they have sent plan to ENPHO with cost estimate to construct two ECOSAN toilets at student hostel of Kailash Mansarovar Children of Humla (KMCH) - a local NGO working on Education and health sector at Humla. Out of total estimated cost of NRs. 80,000; ENPHO had contributed NRs. 52,000 and remaining NRs. 28,000 was contributed by KMCH. A first ECOSAN toilet at Humla district was then constructed.

Chambal Lama, Chairperson of KMACH proudly said,, "We have constructed first ECOSAN toilets in Humla district. Seeing various benefits of ECOSAN toilets, many people started to demand for construction of this toilet".
