Genes and GPS used to map spread of typhoid

Kathmandu, the capital city of Nepal, is a typical example of a densely populated South Asian urban setting where typhoid, caused by both S. Typhi and S. Paratyphi A, is endemic. In an attempt to improve the understanding of the dynamics of transmission of typhoid, Oxford University Clinical Research Unit–Nepal (OUCRU-NP) has taken a novel epidemiological approach, combining bacterial isolation, Single Nucleotide Polymorphism (SNP)-based genotyping and global positioning system (GPS) case localization. The work uncovers the genetic diversity and the corresponding spatio-temporal distribution of S. Typhi found within this local population, providing novel insights into the transmission of typhoid in this urban setting. The methodology developed offers the potential for the design of rational and efficient intervention strategies against typhoid and other infections caused by bacteria with equally limited genetic diversity.
